What a remarkable privilege it was to welcome alumna Joanna Debiase (née Luxon) back to the American School of Warsaw—her first visit to the city after more than 50 years.

Joanna lived in Warsaw with her parents and brother Matthew during the late 1970s, when her father served as the British Airways representative for Poland, Czechoslovakia, and East Germany. She shared vivid memories of both a city and a school that have since undergone profound transformation. From her recollections of a grey, communist-era Warsaw to witnessing today’s dynamic, colorful European capital, Joanna’s reflections were a moving reminder of just how much has changed.

Since her time at ASW, Joanna has built an impressive professional life, enjoying a successful career as a lawyer. She founded and owned her own legal firm—an achievement that speaks to her drive, talent, and dedication. Her story serves as an inspiring example of the paths ASW alumni can take after their time within these walls.

Equally powerful was her return to ASW. Joanna fondly remembered the school’s former home on Konstancińska Street and was visibly moved to see the modern, state-of-the-art campus now located in Konstancin. Her visit served as a bridge between generations—an embodiment of how far the school has come, while staying true to its core values of community, multiculturalism, and excellence.

Joanna also reflected on how impactful it was, even as a child, to be surrounded by families from so many different countries. That early exposure to a truly international environment left a lasting impression and helped shape her worldview—an experience she found beautifully echoed in today’s ASW community.

We hope Joanna’s return lived up to her expectations and we sincerely look forward to welcoming her back again—perhaps next time with her parents—to walk together through both memory and modernity.

The entire ASW community can take pride in its alumni—like Joanna—whose lasting connection to the school speaks volumes. The emotional bond that former students and families maintain with ASW is a testament to the enduring impact of their time here.

Once a Warrior, Always a Warrior.

Thank you Joanna for the visit!
